Dear Parent/Guardian:

As a reminder, the Yough School District has the following days off during the next month.  Please mark your calendars accordingly.

November 24-28        Thanksgiving Holiday Break
December 23-January 3    Winter Holiday Break

As the winter months approach, we will use our normal means of calling school delays or cancellations.  Parents will be notified through our Alert Now message system, the district website, and/or through television and radio on KDKA, WPXI, WTAE, or Froggy FM.

On the rare occasion that school must be cancelled or dismissed early due to an unexpected situation such as severe weather conditions, broken water or gas lines, or other unforeseeable issues, we ask that you speak with your children and have your own emergency plan.  Be sure your children know where to go in case you are not home in an emergency situation.

As a district, we will use our Alert Now system of notification for these types of emergencies.  Make certain that your child’s school has the most up to date contact information for you as the parent or guardian so our Alert Now system can be utilized effectively.

Again, we thank you for your continued support of our schools and community.  We wish you a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season and look forward to 2012.

Yours in education,

Dr. Janet Sardon
Superintendent of Schools

Kindergarten

Children shall be admitted to kindergarten if they have attained the age of five (5) years on or before September 1 of the school year in which they plan to enroll. They shall be admitted to school only during the first two (2) weeks of the annual school term.

Attendance in kindergarten shall not be compulsory nor a prerequisite for admission to the first grade.

Documentation of age can be either a birth certificate, a baptismal certificate, a certified transcript of birth or a notarized statement.

Exceptions to the above-stated age requirements maybe requested. Exceptions will be granted at the discretion of the district based upon information received by the district. If a child does not meet the age requirements above but will attain age five (5) on or before September 30, a parent/guardian has the option to have the child evaluated by a certified school psychologist at his/her expense. In order to qualify for early admission to kindergarten, an IQ of 125 full scale or test composite must be attained on the most recent version of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test or Wechsler School and Primary Scale of Intelligence Scale for Children. The report must be submitted in writing to the elementary office on or before the first day of school.
